Domestic Violence Awareness Month Highlights Resources Available to Louisiana Families

Domestic Violence Awareness Month serves as an important reminder that every person deserves to live free from violence and fear. Domestic violence is more than physical violence and can include emotional, sexual, financial and digital abuse, threats, intimidation, isolation and controlling behaviors. Recognizing the signs is an important first step toward safety and support.

Under Louisiana law, the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services is responsible for issuing and monitoring domestic violence services contracts and supports a statewide network of programs providing safety, shelter, advocacy and other services to individuals and families affected by domestic violence. Through these partnerships, DCFS helps ensure access to resources that support safety, stability and well-being.

“Every person deserves to live free from violence and fear, and no one should have to overcome domestic violence alone,” said DCFS Secretary Rebecca Harris. “We want Louisiana families to know that help is available. Through our statewide network of domestic violence programs, individuals and families can find safety, support and resources to help them move forward in their lives and move past an abusive relationship before it’s too late.”

Warning signs of abuse may include:

  • Controlling where someone goes, who they see or what they do
  • Monitoring phones, email, social media or location
  • Controlling money or access to employment
  • Isolating someone from family and friends
  • Threatening to hurt a partner, children, pets or themselves
  • Sexual coercion
  • Humiliation, intimidation or threats
  • Destroying property
  • Physical violence
