DCFS Reminds Louisiana Families to Prioritize Safety This Halloween

The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services (DCFS) encourages families across Louisiana to enjoy a fun, festive and safe Halloween. As children get ready for trick-or-treating, DCFS reminds parents, caregivers and communities that a few simple precautions can help protect children and make the holiday safer for everyone.

DCFS offers the following Halloween safety tips for families:

  • Stay together. Accompany young children while trick-or-treating. Older children should travel in groups and check in with a trusted adult regularly.
  • Watch for traffic. Use sidewalks when available, cross streets at intersections and look both ways before crossing.
  • Be visible. Use reflective clothing or accessories, and carry flashlights or glow sticks to help children see and be seen by drivers.
  • Plan your route. Stick to familiar, well-lit streets and plan your route before heading out.
  • Choose safe stops. Visit homes with porch lights on, and never enter a stranger’s home or vehicle.
  • Pick safe costumes. Choose costumes that fit properly to prevent tripping, and consider face paint instead of masks that may limit visibility.
  • Check treats. Inspect all treats at home and discard anything unwrapped, suspicious or unfamiliar.
  • Walk, don’t run. Remind children to watch their step and avoid cutting across yards or between parked cars.
  • Prepare for the weather. Check the forecast before heading out. If rain is expected, bring rain gear and use extra caution on wet sidewalks and streets.
  • Dress appropriately. Check temperatures and make sure children are dressed comfortably for the conditions.

With a little planning and extra care, families can help make Halloween a fun and memorable experience for children across Louisiana. DCFS encourages everyone to look out for one another and help keep children safe throughout the holiday.

From all of us at the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services, we wish Louisiana families a happy and safe Halloween!
