Federal Government Approves Launch of Disaster Food Stamp Program

09.05.08 - The United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Services (USDA/FNS) has approved the operation of a Disaster Food Stamp Program in 31 Louisiana parishes. These parishes contain an estimated 380,000 households that will be eligible for disaster food benefits and already serve more than 150,000 households in the regular Food Stamp program.

09.04.08 - Following reports that people are lining up outside of closed parish offices for Disaster Food Stamps, the Department of Children & Family Services (DSS) is reiterating that the first phase of the program has been launched with the distribution of food, water and ice by the National Guard. DSS is preparing for the second phase of the program which is the issuance of Disaster Food Stamp benefits.

09.02.08 - Following Hurricane Gustav, the Department of Children & Family Services is preparing for the issuance of Disaster Food Stamp benefits. This is a federally authorized program that must be approved by the United States Department of Agriculture, Food and Nutrition Services before it can be implemented for eligible Louisiana residents.

09.01.08 - More than 84,000 Louisiana residents are currently taking refuge in shelters in nine states and the Department of Children & Family Services has created a hotline where loved ones can call to locate family members who evacuated for Hurricane Gustav. The phone number is 1-800-957-1601.
