Four Additional Parishes Declared Eligible for Disaster Food Stamp Program

09.13.08 - More than 150,000 Louisiana residents have received much needed economic relief in the form of federal disaster-related food stamps this week, and now thousands more may find themselves eligible as four new parishes meet DFSP guidelines to receive aid. Grant, LaSalle, Catahoula and St. Helena parishes all meet mandated guidelines allowing residents of those areas to begin applying for assistance.

09.13.08 - On Sunday September 14th the Department of Children & Family Services (DSS) will have 23 sites in operation where eligible Louisiana residents affected by Hurricane Gustav can apply for the Federal Disaster Food Stamp Program.

09.12.08 - Despite the threat of Hurricane Ike, the Louisiana Department of Children & Family Services (DSS) processed 18,160 Disaster Food Stamp applications today at 12 sites—only nine of which were open for the full day. The majority of sites closed today in anticipation of the storm. A total of 149,432 applications have been processed over the past four days.

09.11.08 - As a safety precaution with tropical storm force winds already hitting the coast of Louisiana,, mandatory and voluntary evacuations ordered on the coast and traffic concerns the Department of Children & Family Services is closing 27 Disaster Food Stamp sites at 4 p.m. Anyone who is not served today will receive a time stamped application to get them ahead in line when they try again. Also, the program has been extended to Tuesday, September 23rd.

09.11.08 - The Louisiana Department of Children & Family Services (DSS) processed 52,876 Disaster Food Stamp applications today at 42 sites. A total of 131,270 applications have been processed over the past three days.

09.09.08 - Department of Children & Family Services Secretary Ann Silverberg Williamson reiterated her call to the federal government to waive the face-to-face interview requirement for Disaster Food Stamp applicants tonight. “The main reason we requested that waiver was to avoid many of the challenges we faced today,” said Williamson. “This is not an average disaster, we have a very widespread area of people impacted by this storm and they need assistance in a more efficient and timely manner.”

09.05.08 - The United States Department of Agriculture Food and Nutrition Services (USDA/FNS) has approved the operation of a Disaster Food Stamp Program in 31 Louisiana parishes. These parishes contain an estimated 380,000 households that will be eligible for disaster food benefits and already serve more than 150,000 households in the regular Food Stamp program.

09.04.08 - Following reports that people are lining up outside of closed parish offices for Disaster Food Stamps, the Department of Children & Family Services (DSS) is reiterating that the first phase of the program has been launched with the distribution of food, water and ice by the National Guard. DSS is preparing for the second phase of the program which is the issuance of Disaster Food Stamp benefits.
